Manas National Park was officially declared a National Park in 1990. Prior to this, it had been a Wildlife Sanctuary since 1928, aimed at protecting its rich biodiversity. Over the years, Manas has been recognized for its exceptional ecological importance and has earned several prestigious designations:
1. UNESCO World Heritage Site: In 1985, Manas was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its outstanding universal value. This recognition underscores the park’s importance not only for its biodiversity but also for its unique natural beauty and conservation efforts.
2. Project Tiger Reserve: In 1973, Manas was designated as a Tiger Reserve under India’s Project Tiger initiative. This designation has been critical for the protection and conservation of the Bengal tiger population in the park.
3. Elephant Reserve: In recognition of its significant role in the conservation of Asian elephants, Manas was also declared an Elephant Reserve. The park provides a crucial habitat for the large herds of elephants that roam its grasslands and forests.
Biosphere Reserve: Manas is part of the larger Manas Biosphere Reserve, which aims to protect the unique ecosystems found in the region, supporting a wide range of species and natural habitats.
